Decarbonising metal production is essential to securing the longevity of a key strategic industry for Australia, but the sector currently has few commercial options available. In response, ARENA has identified the transition to low emissions metals as a funding priority. In this edition of Insights, we will explore three recent initiatives in the steel and aluminium sectors.

This month ARENA convened the first session of the Alumina Working Group, which brought together representatives from Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and South32 to discuss progress and share lessons in their decarbonisation efforts. The importance of collaboration among industry stakeholders was identified, and the Working Group represents a significant step towards this. Moving forward, these meetings are anticipated to happen twice a year.
