Land Transport is a strategic priority for ARENA and we’re focused on exploring how zero emissions vehicles can support Australia’s pathway to Net Zero. Some of our most interesting insights for 2023 were about electric vehicles (EVs) and how they could be a game-changer in how we think and utilise our energy.
One of the most popular reports of the year explored the challenges and opportunities associated with bidirectional charging (also known as V2X). The V2x.au report forecasts that bidirectional EV charging will represent one of the largest potential enablers of Australia’s energy transition. Based on EV uptake projections, the report predicts that by the early 2030s EV fleet battery capacity is likely to surpass all other forms of storage in the National Electricity Market.
Smart charging trials conducted by ARENA funding recipients AGL, Origin, and Jemena concluded this year, and contributed crucial data on how people currently charge their cars, and how they respond to smart charging. For example, AGL’s trial of 200 residential customers revealed that only 16% of home chargers are used daily, showing that evening peak charging was a lot lower than anticipated.
