As Australia’s variable and renewable energy supply grows, the importance of flexible demand and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) orchestration in tomorrow’s grid increases.
Several ARENA-funded projects in this space have recently wrapped up, bringing valuable insights to the sector. These concluded projects vary in scope and focus, contributing to Australia’s goal of achieving its net zero targets by 2050 in an efficient and flexible way.

The breadth of programs, pilots and policies in the flexible demand space has been growing.
To help catalogue the initiatives underway, ARENA and the Institute of Sustainable Futures at UTS has developed a Demand Flexibility scene setter report. The report provides an overview of ARENA-funded and external trials mapped against project sectors, technologies, value streams, and regulatory reforms in visual tables and charts.
The growing sector calls for growing collaboration, and we hope that setting the scene will help to foster more connections between industry players to share learnings, resources and harmonise next steps for an integrated future.
