This report is a summary of the lessons learned by Power and Water Corporation during the delivery and first year of operation of the Daly River High Contribution Project. The project saw 800kVA/2 MWh Battery energy system (BESS) and 1 MW photovoltaic array integrated into an existing diesel power station.
This is the first energy storage system project for the corporation. Power and Water opted to take on the system integration role in recognition of the importance energy storage and photovoltaic generation technology and the need for these to be utility core business. This strategy avoids vendor lock in and allows the best of breed technologies in future power systems.
This project was successful on many fronts including achieving the project goal of 50% annual fuel savings (estimated at 400kL per annum). Successful project delivery was made possible by many effective decisions and overcoming a number of technical challenges.
