ARENA and RACE for 2030 partner to deliver a National Roadmap for Bidirectional EV Charging in Australia

By 2050, EV batteries could make up ~80% of the gross storage capacity in the NEM. ARENA recognises the vital importance of unlocking this capacity to aid in the energy transition while benefiting EV owners. ARENA is a strong supporter of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) bidirectional charging technology, demonstrated through projects such as Realising Electric Vehicle-to-Grid Services (led by ActewAGL), Automating EV Charging in Line With Wholesale Pricing (led by Amber Electric), and support for studies including V2X.au Summary Report and V2G Network Tariffs Report (delivered by enX).

ARENA is now kicking off the next stage of its V2G support. In partnership with the RACE for 2030 Cooperative Research Center, ARENA will fund the development of a national V2G roadmap that will enable at-scale adoption of bi-directional charging in Australia. Technical consultants enX have been appointed to assist in developing the roadmap.

The roadmap will identify the potential pathways to achieving commercial adoption of bi-directional charging in Australia and will build consensus with key stakeholders in the industry, who have a significant role to play in unlocking these pathways. It will help to inform the next series of investment and policy decisions by the private and public sectors to commercialise V2G in Australia.

The national V2G roadmap will directly contribute to the Australian Government’s National Consumer Energy Resources Roadmap¹ , which seeks to save the energy system billions of dollars and reward consumers for their role in accelerating the transition.
