Opportunities presented by the hybridisation of fossil-fuel and renewable energy were the focus of ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht’s speech to the Australian energy sector last week.

Presenting to the Eastern Australia Energy Markets Outlook 2013 conference, Ivor highlighted that the integration of renewables into existing fossil-fuel generation capacity is a quicker, lower-cost and reduced-risk way of establishing large-scale renewables than standalone projects.

Hybridisation would not only help fossil-fuel generators meet their renewable energy targets, but allow them to use existing infrastructure to expand electricity generation without an increase in emissions.

Ivor also discussed a recent study commissioned by ARENA from Parsons Brinckerhoff that assessed the potential in Australia for hybridising renewable energy into existing fossil fuel power stations.
