Summary

The Yuri Renewable Hydrogen to Ammonia Project will deploy a 10 MW electrolyser powered by 18 MW of solar PV and supported by an 8 MW battery energy storage system, to generate renewable hydrogen to produce renewable ammonia at Yara Pilbara Fertilisers’ neighbouring liquid ammonia plant in Karratha, Western Australia.

Need

The Yuri Renewable Hydrogen to Ammonia Project will be a first of a kind deployment in Australia to generate renewable hydrogen for producing renewable ammonia with off-grid intermittent renewable power via electrolysis. The project aims to demonstrate the business case for renewable hydrogen and develop the renewable ammonia industry in Australia.

The project, together with other demonstration projects, is of critical importance in piloting renewable hydrogen projects from conceptual plans to industrial implementation. Once commissioned it will be among the largest renewable powered electrolysers in the world.

Action

The project will produce renewable hydrogen to partially substitute the hydrogen currently produced using Steam Methane Reforming technology at Yara’s ammonia plant in Karratha. Yuri SPV will develop the project and own the facility, and Yara will offtake 100% of the output.

Outcome

The project will demonstrate and share knowledge on the effectiveness (both technical and commercial) of the development, construction and operation of a first of a kind renewable hydrogen production plant in Australia, and its integration with an ammonia plant. The operational data generated by the project is unique and expected to be valuable for a range of industry stakeholders looking to design, model and analyse future hydrogen projects.

Additional impact

The project will demonstrate the development of a renewable hydrogen and renewable ammonia industry in Australia. The project will also share experiences in the areas of community engagement, permit processes and industry participation.

Note

This project is receiving funding from the Renewable Hydrogen Fund as part of the Western Australian Government’s Renewable Hydrogen Strategy.
