ARENA Chair Martijn Wilder AM takes Asia-Pacific legal innovator prize

ARENA proudly congratulates our ARENA Chair Martijn Wilder AM on being awarded ‘Legal Innovator of the Year’ at the Financial Times Asia – Pacific Innovative Lawyer Awards 2018. At a recent ceremony in Hong Kong the Financial Times announced Martijn as the overall winner of this award from a field of “pioneers of new legal thinking”.

This follows recognition for Martijn in the 2017 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers report, for his work on structuring the International Finance Corporation’s $152m forest bond.

Martijn is a strong believer in the private sector playing a role alongside governments to combat climate change. As head of Baker McKenzie’s Global Environmental Markets and Climate Change practice, Martijn has built a legal team specialising in climate change law, international carbon and broader environmental markets, climate and conservation finance and conservation projects.

As a pioneer in climate change law Martijn’s expertise is in high demand. In addition to his role as Chair of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, he was a Director of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation from 2013 to 2018 and is currently a Director of the World Wildlife Fund (Australia) and the Climate Council.

ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht congratulated Martijn on his latest award, which will be added to a growing showcase of awards and public recognitions.

“Martijn is a powerful and effective advocate for renewable energy. Since his appointment as ARENA Chair in April 2016, Martijn has made an enormous contribution.”

“His deep knowledge of climate change policy and strong connections across the public and private sectors are delivering great results for the environment and renewables,” he said.
