The 2025 ‘ARENA LCA Guidelines for Bioenergy Projects’ offers an updated and comprehensive framework for assessing the environmental impacts of bioenergy projects in Australia. Developed to support ARENA-funded projects, these guidelines ensure that life cycle assessments (LCAs) are robust, transparent, and aligned with both internal best practice and Australia’s unique context.
Background
First published in 2016, the ARENA LCA Guidelines were created to meet the growing need for consistent and reliable assessment of emissions reduction in bioenergy projects. The original edition was developed by Lifecycles and Edge Environment, with input from over 125 stakeholders across Government, industry, academia and community groups.
In 2025, the guidelines were thoroughly reviewed and updated by Lifecycles (reviewed by Edge Impact) to reflect advances in LCA methods, greenhouse gas accounting, and international standards.
What’s New in the 2025 Edition?
- Alignment with international and domestic standards: Guidelines now closely align with leading frameworks such as ISO 14040/44/67, the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), and CORSIA for sustainable aviation fuel. In the Australian context, the Guarantee of Origin (GO) Scheme will also be recognised once finalised.
- Flexibility in approach: Guidance on both “commodity” and “project” LCA approaches, with practical examples and decision trees to help users select the right method for their project.
- Updated reporting requirements: Clear guidance for proponents on what to submit at each project stage – Proof of Concept and Final LCA – including public summary requirements.
Who Should Use These Guidelines?
- Project proponents seeking ARENA support for bioenergy projects
- LCA practitioners and consultants
- Industry stakeholders seeking to demonstrate the environmental benefits of bioenergy
- Policymakers and researchers interested in best-practice LCA for renewable energy
