This Lessons Learnt Report captures the lessons learnt during the pre-feasibility phase and the initial months of feasibility of the NeoSmelt project.

Key learnings include:
- Desktop studies can be insufficient in understanding the full risk profile of sites, particularly enough to allow suitable engineering progression. Instead, field surveys provide valuable insights for site selection
- Shaft Furnace was selected as the most appropriate Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) technology to support the ESF pilot as it can process a variety of feedstocks, producing DRI of various qualities and customisable to meet the pilot facility sizing requirements
- The facility needs to be large enough to demonstrate the commercial concept but small enough that it allows for flexibility to test a wide range of raw material inputs and operate in different modes to produce varying product specifications
