Summary
The Project will deploy 32 front-of-the-meter community batteries across the Endeavour Energy distribution network, with a minimum capacity of 3.4MW/8MWh.
Need
The October 2022 Federal Budget provided $200 million for the Community Batteries for Household Solar Budget Measure (Budget Measure) to deploy 400 community batteries across Australia. Of this, $171 million was allocated to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to deliver at least 342 batteries. Community batteries are a promising solution to enable the storage of distributed renewable energy for later use, reduce distribution network constraints, and put downward pressure on electricity prices.
Action
32 community batteries will support communities in the Endeavour Energy network area, which includes Central West NSW, the Blue Mountains, Greater Western Sydney, Southern Highlands, Illawarra and South Coast of NSW.
The batteries will be located in areas with a forecast aggregate annual curtailed solar generation of 32.9 MWh over the next 15 years. The Project aims to reduce this curtailment, increase localised solar hosting capacity, and directly share benefits to consumers through the development of an energy retail product.
Outcome
- Installation, commissioning, and operation of at least 32 batteries with a minimum capacity of 3.4 MW and 8 MWh.
- Develop and implement a customer storage retail product(s) that allow customers of the selected retail energy market participants access the batteries.
- Produce knowledge sharing publications for Industry and consumers.
