The 150MW/194MWh Hornsdale Power Reserve (HPR) in South Australia had its grid-forming capability enabled in July 2022, being the first in the world to do so. Since then, the HPR has continued to prove its value in responding to contingency events on multiple occasions. The project’s operations reports analyse key events and document valuable lessons. An example of such an event was when South Australia was disconnected from the main grid in November 2022 and the HPR arrested the sudden frequency increase by instantaneously absorbing 90 MW of excess power which helped avoid grid failure.
