Residential gas customers in South Australia make up around 58% of households in the state and typically use 17 GJ of natural gas each year.
Its residential gas consumption is the second largest of the three sectors at 38% behind industrial use at 46%, as shown in Table 1. Households connected to the network generally use gas for cooking and hot water, with some households also using gas for heating given the relatively cool climate in South Australia.
Commercial businesses connected to the South Australian distribution network typically use natural gas for cooking, heating, and hot water.
There are also 112 industrial customers (also known as major gas users) connected to the network in South Australia. More information on these customers is set out in Section 2.2.
While the annual consumption profile of the South Australian gas distribution network is flatter compared with Victoria, owing to the significant proportion of industrial demand in South Australia, it still follows a winter peaking pattern driven by the increased need for heat in colder periods of the year. This is evident in Figure 2 below – note the demand peaks in July 2016, 2017,
and 2018
