This lessons learnt report covers all eight ARENA funding agreements with Evie, under the Future Fuels Fund (FFF) program. This includes the EV Charger rollout in all state and territory capital cities in Australia. The report covers the rate of uptake of EV’s versus Infrastructure Charger rollout, electricity tariff reform, and fire risk.
Report extract
Evie Networks’ Future Fuels Public Fast Charging program commenced in August 2021. Evie’s first charging station under this program was launched in October 2021. As of May 2023 Evie has commissioned 44 out of a total of 158 fast charging stations, with many more in the pipeline to be built. In addition to the Future Fuels Fund program, Evie operates approximately 70 other fast charging stations located in metropolitan areas, on highways and in regional towns. Operating a diverse network has enabled Evie to garner insights about utilisation, performance and costs associated with operating charging infrastructure.
This report provides insights regarding utilisation on the network, as well as highlighting some of the ongoing challenges with deployment, as follows:
- Rate of EV uptake is accelerating faster than charging infrastructure deployment.
- Potential progress on electricity tariff reform for public fast charging.
- Some site hosts raising concerns about fire risk associated with EV charging, conflating the real issues with e-scooters and e-bikes.
To demonstrate insights we use data from the wider Evie network as well as public sources.
