How to Apply for Funding
Last year the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced a funding round of up to $70 million to help fast track the development of renewable hydrogen in Australia.
The Renewable Hydrogen Deployment Funding Round (the Round) is expected to open in April 2020 under ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program (ARP) and will seek applications for commercial scale renewable hydrogen deployment projects.
The Round follows the release of the National Hydrogen Strategy in late 2019 and is in line with the Australian Government’s focus on growing an innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry in Australia.
In developing the Round, ARENA will investigate funding for projects that involve commercial scale deployments of electrolysers, particularly over 10 MW in scale, to drive the commercialisation of key component technologies, facilitate the development of key supply chains and disseminate key information to industry.
Hydrogen – or carriers like ammonia – are potentially a way for Australia to export renewable energy. Electrical energy can be readily converted into hydrogen via electrolysis that separates hydrogen from oxygen in water, and when produced using renewable electricity, is entirely emissions free.
At present, hydrogen is used in the industrial and chemical sectors and is derived primarily from natural gas. In the future, hydrogen has the potential to be used in a range of applications from industrial applications to household appliances, remote power, transport, for storing energy in our existing gas network, and represents a significant long term export opportunity.
Information and Consultation Forums
ARENA has conducted Information and Consultation Forums on the Renewable Hydrogen Funding Round in major capital cities across Australia. Each session outlined the draft specifications for the intended funding round and provided an opportunity for discussion and input to assist ARENA in finalising its approach.
The five information sessions occurred on the following dates:
- Brisbane – 21 February 2020
- Sydney – 24 February 2020
- Perth – 3 March 2020
- Melbourne – 6 March 2020
- Tasmania – 10 March 2020
- Adelaide – 11 March 2020
The Round parameters will be finalised following the completion of the forums.
Further information on the Round will be made available via our website shortly. ARENA currently expects Expression of Interest applications to open in April 2020.
