Summary
The SA Strategic Regional Electric Vehicle Adoption Program project goal is to accelerate EV adoption, help to optimise infrastructure investment and help ensure that EVs are powered by renewable energy.
This involves understanding behavioural barriers to adoption and suggesting interventions, understanding how EV’s will be used and where they will likely be charged and investigating how EVs can best integrate with local solar generation and the wider grid in South Australia.
How the project works
The SA Strategic Regional Electric Vehicle Adoption Program project will recruit a large cohort of South Australians through an EV public awareness platform named “Charge Together South Australia”. Quantitative and behavioural research will be conducted including experimenting with interventions that may accelerate adoption. Monitoring of home energy usage and driving patterns will provide data required to understand real-world behaviours.
The outcomes will be an understanding of measures required to stimulate adoption, data required to help plan infrastructure and total cost of ownership tools that demonstrate the benefits of electric vehicles when coupled with solar power and batteries.

Area of innovation
Although Australia is behind the global push to electric vehicles, there is the opportunity to learn from best practice. This project applies lessons from global markets to establish a platform to accelerate adoption, and to do so in a way that improves community outcomes.
In most countries, dealing with this change has been reactionary and the innovation in the project is in the methodology applied to simultaneously dealing with major constraints to this goal – infrastructure, model availability, cost perceptions and general awareness in a more integrated manner. In particular, countries have not approached EV and solar adoption in concert.
The tools and data created and the manner in which these are utilised will be a world first.
Benefit
The SA Strategic Regional Electric Vehicle Adoption Program project will deliver vital information to governments and car manufacturers to help stimulate adoption. It will provide tools for consumers that help them make the switch sooner, and also demonstrate how electric cars can work together with rooftop solar and battery storage to deliver better returns on investment and grid stability.
